Door & window sensor

Application 2024-03-04

Non-isolated DC/DC power supply

Door and window sensors are often powered from a coin cell battery. As a result, long battery life is a key design consideration. Buck converters with high light-load efficiency may be considered for designs prioritizing maximum battery life. For designs operating from a low voltage battery, boost converters may be used instead. Linear regulators (LDOs) are a good option for simple designs. LDOs also enable added functionalities including EMI filtering.

Sensor analog front end

Reed switches and Hall effect sensors are two technologies used to detect the presence or absence of a magnet embedded in a door or window frame. Reed switches use a physical switch that closes in the presence of a magnetic field and opens when the field is removed. On the other hand, Hall effect sensors detect the magnetic field using no moving parts. Inductance-to-digital converters do not use magnets at all which makes them immune to tampering magnets.

Wireless interface

The wireless interface in the design allows status information to be transmitted to a central location. A system-on-chip solution, which integrates a microcontroller and radio, allows designs to run the application layer and wireless protocol stack on one chip. A microcontroller with dedicated RF radio topology allows designs to separate the wireless protocol stack from the application layer.
