Overview

Description

Related applications

Our integrated circuits and reference designs help you create a glass break detector design that maintains long battery life while continuously listening for the sound of shattered glass.

Design requirements

Glass break detectors often require:

Amplification and filtering of both low-frequency (< 300 Hz) and subsequent high-frequency (> 9kHz) glass break sounds.

Reduced maintenance through battery-powered designs with long battery life.

Ultra-low-power wireless communication with 2.4-GHz and Sub-1-GHz networks.

Non-isolated DC/DC power supply

Glass break detectors may be powered from a battery or a 12V DC wired power source. Buck converters with high light-load efficiency may be considered for designs prioritizing maximum battery life. For designs operating from a low voltage battery, boost converters may be used instead. Linear regulators (LDOs) are a good option for simple designs. LDOs also enable added functionalities including EMI filtering.

Glass break detector analog front end

An acoustic glass break detector (GBD) analog front-end amplifies and filters the output of a narrowband microphone. The GBD analog front-end filters are tuned specifically for glass shatter frequencies and a comparator may be used to detect when sound levels go above a specific threshold. Additionally, the system microcontroller analyzes the output of the GBD analog front-end and uses pattern recognition to match to specific sound signatures and reject imposter signatures.

Relay system

A relay system allows the glass break detector to operate an alarm. A mechanical relay system provides the lowest cost solution, but generates loud clicking noises and has physical contacts that wear out. A solid-state relay (SSR) system performs the same function without the use of mechanical parts. A digital SSR system consisting of control logic and MOSFET switches provides a small-footprint and low-BOM-count solution.
