Non-isolated DC/DC power supply
Multiple voltage rails are generated from the input power source to support all the devices used in the system. Buck converters with high efficiency at light load can be used in designs that prioritize maximum battery life. Low-noise, high-PSRR linear regulators may be used to ensure EMI specifications are met and improve wireless communication. A low-cost, low-efficiency linear regulator can be used when cost is a high priority and efficiency is a low priority.

Wireless interface
Adding a wireless interface to the design allows status and alarm information to be transmitted to a central location. A system-on-chip solution which integrates a microcontroller and radio allows designs to run the application layer and wireless protocol stack on one chip. A microcontroller with dedicated RF radio topology allows designs to separate the wireless protocol stack from the application layer.

SLC communication
Signal Line Circuit (SLC) communication is used to transmit power and data to devices connected in a closed loop. This allows the loop to continue to operate with line breaks and other faults. This is a 24V nominal DC current limited bus. Because it is current limited, the bus can easily be modulated by the control panel or the connected detectors. In this way, the panel can perform diagnostics and control, while the attached detectors can send messages back to the control panel in the case of alarm or fault conditions or as part of the diagnostics routine.

Audible alarm interface
A buzzer or speaker output allows for alarms to be generated by the system. A boost converter or charge pump topology provides a loud alarm notification (85 dB). A piezo driver topology or a Class D audio topology provides a single tone notification or an audible voice notification. A MOSFET topology is for designs with a higher rail, such as in the case of 9V alkaline battery systems, for which an MCU command will drive the buzzer on or off.
