Monitoring/protection/cell-balancing
This sub-system is responsible for monitoring and protecting the battery pack. The data that is monitored includes individual cell voltage and pack temperature. It also implements active/passive cell balancing of each battery cell inside the battery pack. Additionally it can control the charge and discharge FET present in the battery pack.

Fuel gauge/battery management controller
This subsystem consists of control unit that can communicate and configure the battery analog front end. It also implements the State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) monitoring of the battery pack. Additionally it can implement a communication interface outside of the battery-pack for status monitoring and indication purposes.

Charge/discharge power stage
The Charge/Discharge Power Stage is used to protect the battery pack from abnormalities such as over voltage, over current charging/discharging, over temperature and external short-circuit. This can be implemented by using two low voltage FETs, which are controlled by the battery analog front end or the fuel gauge/ MCU.
