Non-isolated DC/DC power supply
Multiple voltage rails are generated from the input power source to support all the devices used in the system. Buck converters with high efficiency at light load can be used in designs that prioritize maximum battery life and better thermal efficiency. Low-noise, high-PSRR linear regulators may be used to ensure EMI specifications are met and improve wireless communication. Power management multi-channel ICs (PMICs) will provide multiple voltage rails in a small footprint for tight conscious designs.

Energy storage
A backup battery may be included in the design to provide some protection against an unexpected power loss. A battery management device can handle charging in systems that use a rechargeable battery. A battery gauge device can monitor the battery voltage.

Digital input/output interface

Audible alarm interface
A buzzer or speaker output allows for alarms to be generated by the system. A boost converter or charge pump topology provides a loud alarm notification (85 dB) from a 3V rail. A piezo driver topology or a Class D audio topology provides a single tone notification or an audible voice notification. A 555 timer topology gives a pulsed alarm rather than a constant alarm notification without adding additional MCU instructions. A MOSFET topology is for designs with a higher rail for which an MCU command will drive the buzzer on or off.
