Energy storage

A backup battery may be included in the design to provide protection against an unexpected power loss. A battery gas gauge device can monitor the battery voltage. An ORing controller is used to combine the battery output voltage and output voltage from the wired power source. A boost converter may be needed to raise the battery output voltage.

Output user interface

Traditional intrusion HMI keypads use an LCD display and status LEDs to communicate information to the user. An LED driver may be used to drive status LEDs. A capacitive or resistive touchscreen may be used in lieu of a more traditional LCD display. A piezo speaker or buzzer may also be used to generate alarm notifications and button press sounds.

Input user interface

The user interface allows the user to arm and disarm the home security system. Traditional designs may use an I/O expander device to interface to a mechanical keypad. A capacitive keypad design or a touchscreen LCD/TFT display can be used to completely eliminate mechanical buttons. Haptics feedback may also be included for a more robust user experience.

Wired interface

Wireless interface

The wireless interface allows the intrusion HMI keypad to communicate with other devices in the home security system. A system-on-chip solution which integrates a microcontroller and radio allows designs to run the application layer and wireless protocol stack on one chip. A microcontroller or microprocessor with dedicated RF topology allows designs to separate the wireless protocol stack from the application layer. A range extender can be used if additional range is required or will be used in an area that can expect a weak radio signal.
