NXP launches dedicated motor control solution for software-defined automotive edge nodes, further expanding S32 platform

Industry News 2023-11-22

【Lansheng Technology News】November 21, 2023 -NXP Semiconductorstoday released S32M2, further expanding the S32 automotive computing platform. Specialized motor control solutions are optimized to increase efficiency in automotive applications such as pumps, fans, sunroofs and seat positions, seat belt pretensioners, liftgates and more. S32M2 is based on the S12 MagniV® product portfolio and fully integrates NXP’s motor control technology experience and the software development advantages of the S32 platform.

This highly integrated system-in-package solution adds the power and analog functions required for motor control, as well as a rich software library, as an integrated motor control solution for the widely adopted NXP S32K microcontroller. It meets the needs of the emerging software-defined electric vehicle market, supports car manufacturers to fully optimize product development, and maximizes the software reuse rate implemented in the S32 platform.

Among many types of motors, brushless DC and permanent magnet synchronous motors are known for their ruggedness, small size, light weight and high efficiency, which all help electric vehicles save energy, reduce consumption and increase cruising range. The S32M2 not only simplifies powerful motor control functions for efficient operation, but also maintains the performance margin to integrate more functions and features while optimizing cost.

OEMs can perform motor diagnostic testing, transmit data to zone controllers, and optimize for higher performance, further improving efficiency, and reducing audio noise in the final application to improve passenger comfort. Compared with discrete motor control solutions, OEMs using S32M2 can speed up product launch, reduce printed circuit board volume, and reduce design risks and material costs.

With the release of S32M2,NXP'sS32 automotive computing platform has further steadily expanded, and the vast Arm® software ecosystem has also contributed to product development. NXP and Arm have established a close, long-term partnership to jointly develop new technologies. NXP's next-generation motor control solutions can fully leverage the energy efficiency and security features of Arm Cortex™-M processors.

Using a SiP packaging approach, the S32M2 combines advanced computing capabilities with MOSFET gate drivers, a physical layer interface for CAN FD and LIN communications, and a built-in voltage regulator powered directly from the automotive 12 V battery to address a variety of motor control applications need.

The S32M2 series integrates Arm Cortex-M4 or Cortex-M7 cores and covers a variety of memory options from 128KB to 1MB. The S32M2 is packaged in a 64-pin LQFP package, allowing automakers to flexibly choose different memory sizes, and all products in the same series are pin-compatible. In addition, the SiP packaging solution leverages the S32K development process with ISO 26262 ASIL B functional safety certification, the S32 platform’s proven safety subsystem, and S32K’s comprehensive tool and software ecosystem.
