NXP releases battery management system IC

Industry News 2023-10-25

【Lansheng Technology News】October 24, 2023 - NXP Semiconductors launched a next-generation battery controller IC designed to optimize the performance and safety of the battery management system (BMS). NXP's MC33774 18-channel analog front-end device provides cell measurement accuracy as low as 0.8 mV and excellent cell balancing force over a wide temperature range. It supports functional safety level ASIL-D and is suitable for high voltages that are closely related to safety. Lithium-ion batteries to fully exploit the available capacity.

A typical 800V lithium-ion battery system consists of approximately 200 individual battery cells connected in series. Accurately estimating the state of charge of a battery pack at any given temperature and instant in time is critical over its multi-year life cycle. NXP's MC33774 provides accurate battery measurements over the entire life cycle over the full temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, enabling highly accurate range predictions.

Li Xiaohe, vice president and general manager of the new energy and drive system product line at NXP, said: "MC33774 has undergone a rigorous design and verification process to ensure its safety and reliability in automotive applications. This includes testing through system-level verification Electromagnetic compatibility, electrostatic discharge performance, transient immunity and communication reliability in harsh scenarios. MC33774 is designed to reduce the cost of OEM systems while maintaining their reliability, ensuring that the electric vehicle industry can achieve success even with short development cycles It also allows the car to be put on the market safely.”

The MC33774 lithium-ion battery cell controller uses NXP's SmartMOS SOI technology to provide battery measurement accuracy as low as ±0.8 mV, helping to ensure the accuracy of nickel manganese cobalt (NCM) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Lifetime performance of chemical materials. The precision design and calibration technology of NXP MC33774 can save customers the cost of end-of-line inspection (EOL) calibration.

The NXP MC33774 18-channel Li-ion battery management system IC is part of NXP’s high-voltage BMS chipset solution, which includes future products such as the MC33777 (battery junction box controller for pack-level measurements), as well as already released MC33665 battery management communication gateway. This comprehensive and powerful BMS system solution provides a battery system that is developed successfully the first time while striving to avoid accidents in the field. The complete design package includes production-grade software and functional safety libraries to help speed the development of functional safety systems and save system costs.
