ROHM develops 120W high-output laser diode "RLD90QZW8" for LiDAR

Industry News 2023-10-25

【Lansheng Technology News】Semiconductor manufacturer ROHM has developed a high-output power semiconductor laser diode "RLD90QZW8". This product is very suitable for AGVs and service robots in the industrial equipment field equipped with LiDAR*1 for ranging and spatial recognition, and consumer products. Applications such as sweeping robots in the electronics field.

In recent years, LiDAR, which can accurately measure distances and identify spaces, has become increasingly popular in a wide range of applications that require automated work, such as AGVs, sweeping robots, and self-driving cars. In this context, in order to detect information "further" and "more accurately", laser diodes as light sources are required to increase their output power and performance.

ROHM already has its own patented technology that achieves a narrower laser linewidth, helping LiDAR support longer distances and achieve higher accuracy. ROHM developed the 25W laser diode "RLD90QZW5" in 2019 and the 75W laser diode "RLD90QZW3" in 2021. In order to meet the market's strong demand for higher output power, ROHM has developed a new product with an output power of up to 120W.

"RLD90QZW8" is a 120W high-output power infrared laser diode developed for LiDAR that uses a 3D ToF system*2 for ranging and spatial recognition. Using ROHM's own component development technology, compared with ordinary products, the new product's laser wavelength temperature impact is reduced by 66% to only ⊿11.6nm (average 0.10nm/℃). This advantage facilitates the use of narrower passband bandpass filters*3, which helps LiDAR achieve long-distance detection. In addition, the new product also achieves the industry's ultra-narrow linewidth of 270μm, and achieves uniform and stable luminous intensity within the 264μm range (97% of the linewidth), which helps improve the accuracy of LiDAR. In addition, the new product also achieves excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) and higher light output efficiency, helping to reduce LiDAR power consumption.

Not only that, ROHM's official website also provides rich design data required for new product evaluation and introduction for free, providing strong support for accelerating the application of this product. To drive laser diodes used in LiDAR, nanosecond-level high-speed switching is required. Therefore, ROHM also announced the corresponding reference design "REFLD002" on its official website. In addition to new products, this reference design also uses EcoGaN developed by ROHM. ™ series of 150V GaN HEMTs and gate drivers.
