Samsung Display and Samsung Semiconductor cooperate to accelerate OLEDoS technology breakthrough

Industry News 2023-11-06

【Lansheng Technology Information】Samsung is accelerating its entry into the extended reality market. Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display have begun cooperation to develop OLEDoS. Due to the nature of its manufacturing process, OLEDoS requires semiconductor process technology, and Samsung Display decided to use Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor process. Since OLEDoS installed on XR devices is considered a promising market, it is estimated that the competitiveness of Korean companies will further improve in the future.

Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display announced on the 31st of last month that they had reached an internal deal to grant a non-exclusive license to the semiconductor processing technology developed and manufactured by Samsung Electronics' OLEDoS. This means that Samsung Display can use Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor processing technology to develop OLEDoS technology, with a transaction value of 39.1 billion won.

OLEDoS is a microdisplay. Microdisplays refer to ultra-high-resolution displays with high pixel density of thousands of PPI in a small size of about 1 inch. Although the display size is small, it is suitable for displaying screens that are magnified tens to hundreds of times, so it is used for XR devices.

Samsung Display has taken steps to enhance the competitiveness of OLEDoS. At the end of last year, the company reorganized its organizational structure and established a microdisplay research institute, including OLEDoS. American microdisplay company iMagin also completed its acquisition this year. In addition, the company is also accelerating its entry into the XR market by cooperating with "big brother" Samsung Electronics in semiconductor processes.

At the same time, voices are being made both inside and outside the display industry, requiring semiconductor companies to cooperate with display companies to accelerate the development and commercialization of micro-display technology and maintain the status of a display power. It is believed that the XR display market also has promising prospects. The XR market size is expected to grow from US$942 million last year to US$7.3 billion in 2027. Accordingly, LG Display has begun cooperating with SK Hynix to develop and mass-produce OLEDoS, and Samsung Display is also expected to cooperate with Samsung Electronics.
